about Shelley
In 2019 I graduated with a BA (Hons) in Costume and Performance Design from the The Arts University Bournemouth. My passion for historical costume compelled me to further my studies where I went on to complete a MA in Historical Costume.
In June 2020, I was awarded First Prize for the Costume Society's Patterns of Fashion Award. Made entirely from calico, the brief asked to reconstruct a historically correct garment from Janet Arnold's Patterns of Fashion books. I chose to construct an 1873 promenade dress and made the decision to dye the fabric for the contrasting design details. To further investigate the historical underpinnings of the victorian period, I made a selection of half-scale bustles and crinolines to analyse which underpinnings would have been worn to create the correct victorian silhouette.
In 2018, I was employed by the BBC as a costume assistant for the TV series Father Brown. Here, I was responsible for costume construction, alterations and dressing supporting artists.
Prior to this, I was an amateur musical theatre performer for over 30 years, before my passion progressed into the costume side of performance.
I have had over 10 years of experience as a volunteer costume officer for amateur musical theatre productions and pantomime. Responsibilities included: costume design, costume construction, managing wardrobe, sourcing costumes, fitting, alterations and dressing.
I have had many years experience of Bridal alterations & Construction, I Look forward to designing and making future bespoke bridal gowns.
